I’ve always been paid on time, the 10th of every month. No problems with medical either. Management has changed recently, so some people have gotten their severance early. Others have to wait 45 days or more. But they have always received it. Apartments are nice and well furnished. Problems are generally addressed quickly, but sometimes you have to mention your problem a few times before it is fixed. Overall a good hagwon, it’s been in business for 5 or 6 years. The preschool has about 130 students. Currently there are about 12 foreign teachers at the school. Afternoon attendance for classes has been going down recently. Maybe due to the economy and better hagwons in the area.

As with any hagwon, read everything you sign carefully. Contract says 45 days to get your severance. The law says 14. Get this changed. Double check your hours every month and make sure you’re not supposed to get overtime pay. Although their calculation of hours is almost impossible to decode.

Perks of this school. Since I’ve been here, we’ve been on two “staff retreats”. One was a Saturday trip to a sheep farm (kind of lame, but a nice gesture), and a temple stay at Bongeunsa, a temple in Seoul. Definitely had a good time on the temple stay.

I started at 2.1 million in July 2008, but teachers start at 2.2 nowadays. Make sure you get at least this much.

I worked for SLP in Seongdong gu from May 2009 until May 2010. I would have asked to renew my contract and stay longer, but I hate teaching so I figured it was time to move on. I really liked it there though. The apartments are really nice, all of them are within walking distance of the school. They’re not huge or anything but they have air conditioning and heat, TV, internet, some have microwaves, all have a washing machine. The school itself is good too. I always got paid on time, if I had overtime coming, it was always in my check without me having to remind them. Of course, as an American, there were some cultural differences and frustrations. Some things will happen that will make you stop and think ‘um what? That would never happen in the States’ but never anything that made me feel so upset that I wanted to leave. I was making 2.2 but after all the bills were taken out, it ended up being between 1.8 and 1.9 every month. A few times when complaints from crazy moms came in (and they will no matter how good of a teacher you are), my supervisor always backed me up. It’s a good place to work.

I worked at this location for one year starting in August ‘07. I was paid on time every month and generally was supported by the higher ups. There is a ton of paperwork at this school and monthly testing. For bonuses you get wine, not cash. Jenny, the lead Korean teacher is pretty awesome. I’ve heard the attendence has been diminishing, but I believe they are still hiring. The one drawback to this school is that they expect you to be there or find a substitute even if you are deathly ill. I was ridiculously sick the first two months, even needing to be hospitalized once and they told me i had to find a substitute (almost impossible) or I needed to come in. They don’t help you at all with this process. I believe that now they have the lead Korean teacher that can cover your class if you are sick, but at the time they didn’t which made me feel like they didn’t care about me at all. There is a dentist and an ear nose and throat doctor on the same floor of the bldg. that are very good at what they do and very convenient.
I love that they incorporate a music and art program into the curriculum as well.
All the best!
