Sejong Academy – Seobu: Guun-dong, Gyeonggi-do

Let me preface this review by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Sejong Academy albeit I still suffered a few (trivial) conflicts, but nothing out of the ordinary for any foreign english teacher in korea.

I’ll state the pro’s first:
1. The owner received his BA & MBA in New York and is also fluent in English. His understanding of American culture is a HUGE asset.
2. Always paid on time.
3. Solid apartment.
4. Assistance with phone, internet, etc.
5. Assistance in the classroom.
6. Free dinner–delicious!
7. Warm family-like faculty atmosphere.

However, I’m unable to make a “list” of vices because, to be honest, I didn’t have an outstanding problem with Sejong. The schedule may change randomly or they may ask you to come out to a party or, worse yet, dress you up as santa claus, but it was never anything to lose sleep over.

The only issue that was a cause for concern was stipulated in that, my co-worker was fired for performing poorly. As a result, I had to double-down my workload and taught for six hours straight, everyday, for eight weeks. Was it a bad break? Yes. Have I heard of worse happening to other teachers? Yes.

I considered what happened at Sejong Academy akin to what would happen in any workplace. With that said, Sejong never deliberately screwed me or ignored my presence. I was treated with respect, often complimented for my efforts and was graced with a sense of belonging.

Suffice to say, Sejong is a fantastic place to work at, but don’t be surprised if they need you to step up!
