The small apartment was a dump. The furnishings were nasty. I was cheated out of vacation days and sick days. The crook of an owner/director overtaxed and never paid in any of the taxes, 5%. I got stiffed on medical expenses due to him not paying in to the system. No pension. He overcharged on maintenance fees. The list goes on... He has now change the name of the place to NGL (New Global Leaders English Academy). I worked at this school for one year. The small apartment was a dump. The furnishings were nasty. The director picked me up from the airport, took me back to my apartment then made sexual advances on me. I was made to sign a contract that I wouldn't tell the police or have his school taken away from him in order to gain a release letter so I could work at another school. I'm just grateful I didn't go back to my home country after this experience, as now I have been in Korea for 3 years and I love it! Don't go anywhere near this school! Director is the greasiest, cheating sleaze ever. I went toe to toe with him on everything because it was my second year in Daegu and I wasn't such a fresh fish as to take it all lying down. He would try to just yell at me via a Korean teacher and I'd just walk out...like I'm going to sit and listen to his lies! He refused to honor contract stipulations that I made sure to put in place before I went. Like everyone says, get it in writing and fight. Apartment was disgusting and had a non-functioning air conditioner that from the comment above looks like wasn't fixed 3 years later... Worked here for a while in 2006 before pulling a runner. Here is a truthful account as to why you should not work there. During my time there, I was denied access to the national health insurance plan which is required by law. That was very problematic for me. As well, no contributions were made to the national retirement account which is required by law. I was berated almost daily. I was made to pay 100,000 won to move my apartment’s air conditioner because the crazy woman downstairs said that it made a sound. I was asked to forgo using the air conditioner altogether. I was made to take all of my vacation days on days that I would have been off anyway. I was told to never again refer to myself as a professional. I witnessed the director striking a female Korean teacher with his hand. I witnessed female Korean teachers being driven to tears by the director. I witnessed the director striking teenage students and belittling them to the extent that they cried and were obviously humiliated. Toward the end of my contract, the director contacted by phone my prospective new employers and convinced ! them not to hire me. One of those perspective employers became so enraged by a phone call from my director that he called me and threatened to have me deported. And finally, I was outwardly denied my return ticket to the US which would have been valued at about 900,000 won. If you go to work for this academy, you’re nuts.
