Oh Sung-Sik English Club – Daegu Bokhyun: Bokhyun-dong, Daegu

I worked at Oh Sung Sik in Daegu for one year in 2009. Here is a truthful account as to why you should not work there.
During my time there, I was denied access to the national health insurance plan which is required by law. That was very problematic for me. As well, no contributions were made to the national retirement account which is required by law. I was berated almost daily. I was made to pay 100,000 won to move my apartment’s air conditioner because the crazy woman downstairs said that it made a sound. I was asked to forgo using the air conditioner altogether. I was made to take all of my vacation days on days that I would have been off anyway. I was told to never again refer to myself as a professional. I witnessed the director striking a female Korean teacher with his hand. I witnessed female Korean teachers being driven to tears by the director. I witnessed the director striking teenage students and belittling them to the extent that they cried and were obviously humiliated. Toward the end of my contract, the director contacted by phone my prospective new employers and convinced ! them not to hire me. One of those perspective employers became so enraged by a phone call from my director that he called me and threatened to have me deported. And finally, I was outwardly denied my return ticket to the US which would have been valued at about 900,000 won.
