LIKE School – Samduk: Samduk-dong, Daegu

There are 3 schools in Daegu. I worked at the Samduk location. The Kim’s, who own the schools, aren’t nice people. Many Koreans and Americans or Canadians have left the school for they (the Kim’s) don’t honor the contract and they treat you like their personal puppet. I, on serveral occasions, stuck up to them politely asking them to honor the contract for holidays and working conditions. I learned that they aren’t people I’d ever work for again. You will get paid on time, however since you live in their ‘dorm’ they will take 160,000 w for utilities, 16,000 w for internet. Along with the health and pension, they are taking about 300,000 to 400,000 w each pay check.
Since you’ll be living in a ‘dorm’, the place isn’t cleaned. I came into my room and it was full of dust, the bathroom/shower was full of soap scum. It was pretty gross. I’ve learned the Kim’s are cheap people. At the end of the contract they take 40,000 w from your last paycheck to clean the apartment, but it doesn’t get clean. It’s more money for their pocket.
Also, you work on Saturday. Almost all the Hagwons aren’t open on Saturday, and if they are and you work it, then you will be paid cash for working that day. There at LIKE, you will work on Saturdays as if it’s a normal working day. Also, one sorry soul will have to work on Sunday too. I flat out told them that I don’t work on Sunday’s for I go to church. They were a bit annoyed that would go against them.
In Daegu there are a lot of American Military bases, if you make friends with them, they will buy American food for you. I was privileged to make a few friends and have American food.
If someone was honest with me before going there and told me about everything: the school, condictions to the contract, etc I would have found other employment elsewhere. If you find them, don’t go. There are better hagwons out there.
