Please be warned that this school DOES NOT offer South Korea’s standard socialized healthcare plan. Gwanak Poly offers “international private healthcare.” They do pay 50% of every hospital visit anywhere in the world. However, if you want to go to a clinic/office of your choice (doctor, ophthalmologist, dentist, etc.), you must pay full price. This is because they only cover HOSPITAL visits (and visits to a specific licensed doctor/pediatrician and specific dentist in the same building as Poly). Unfortunately, if you need to get your eyes checked, see an ENT or any other specialist who doesn’t work in a hospital, you’re on your own. Just a warning.

Correction: They reimburse you for 50% of healthcare costs. Other foreign employees at the school claim there is no healthcare coverage and that everything is being done out of pocket by the school. The latter part is secondhand speculation, but it’s scary that it’s being proposed in the first place.

My contract stated a certain amount to be paid per month. In the beginning, it seemed like the right amount was being deducted for utilities. Then, more and more was deducted-to the point that my salary was a few hundred short each month. Considering my stinginess with utilities, there’s no way that’s legit. Keep your paystubs, peeps. They’re going to rip you off here.

Stay clear of POLY unless you are so desperate for work that you have no problem working ridiculous hours for little pay, and being taken advantage of along the way. If you are interested in coming to Korea, there are so many better options than POLY. For example CDI is a way better work environment. POLY will follow the rules for the most part, except for the unreal work load that will at times, especially at first, force you to take work home. After a week of 11 hour work days, and 55 classes a week, you don’t want to take work home. They trick you by saying its the best pay in Korea, but they leave out that its for double the work of anywhere else. Hourly, its probably the worst pay I know of.
