If you want to keep your sanity and self-respect, don’t even fathom working here. They over work their teachers (at school from 2pm – 10pm), keep a constant income by changing useless books often so parents have to keep buying new books and don’t care about the children. The director speaks no English and they only care about making money. Also, they will screw you over any chance they get. They told my friend they did not have his original diploma, that immigration kept it. This was false. The head Korean teacher had kept it in her desk with something rotting and left a giant stain on it and refused to reimburse for it. They also take over 600,000won for something called a ‘housing fee’. They keep this money if you don’t finish the year along with 900,000won for flight (even if you stay over 6 months, which is illegal) and only 70% of your last pay. They also claim to pay health insurance but do not. They will t! ake 10,000won from you every month but if you go to the doctor you find you are not covered under the national health program and must pay any bills in full. Good luck getting reimbued for that! In short, DON’T WORK FOR ELC SAMSAN UNLESS YOU ENJOY BEING TREATED LIKE DIRT!

Working for ELC Samsandong was an absolute nightmare. They have unreasonable expectations for their foreign teachers in terms of work load and conduct. My foreign coworkers and I would come in as early as 1 1/2 hours beforehand and stay 45 minutes to an hour after finish in order to try and compete with the mountains of paperwork. The amount of books that this school uses is obscene, we were using around 5 different books PER CLASS consecutively and the books change (i.e. every single book) with no warning. The administration is very amibiguous on what the rules and expectations for teachers are and change them often without informing any foreigners (we’re talking three times a week at one point). They then repremand the foreign staff and subject you to meetings where you have to write down (in a handy booklet) everything you’ve done wrong and how you can improve. They’re also very quick to fire teachers if they think they can save money and/or they don’t like you (which is pretty much a given, the director seems to hate foreigners). They will also deduct from your final pay where ever they can. Only an extreme masochist would even consider working for this school.
