CDI is a large corporation and recognized by most Korean parents. However, each branchise acts independently. Each class is 3 hours long, making it a grueling first couple of months. Each class is video taped and each instructor is expected to stand and teach for all three hours. There are five minute breaks every hour. Vacation is rare. Many instructors never take vacation because it doesn’t get approved. Like any other organization, leadership plays a major role and, at this location, the leadership changes frequently making it difficult to ever feel settled. On the flip side, all lessons are pre-prepped and class structure is detailed by headquarters. There are about ten instructors who are close-nit. Jeonju has a nice foreigners community, and they do some really cool things like plays, art shows, and such. Of all the private institutes in Jeonju, this one is probably the best. Pay has always been on time and accurate at my branch, which is the most important to me.

CDI is a large corporation, and the performance of different branches throughout the country can vary a lot. I worked here for 18 months in 2010 – 2011, and have very positive feelings about them as an employer and as a school. The good things for me were reliable pay and hours, good pre-prepared lessons, and a good set of fellow instructors. During my time there were between 8-10 instructors at a time, and they were all very professional.

The main negatives come from the high turnover – as everywhere in Korea teachers are constantly coming and going, so it makes it hard to establish consistent working relationships. The Korean staff at the school was mostly stable, however the top management has changed twice in the past three years, which can shake things up, However, when I left, the school was under the management of a very professional and (importantly) bilingual manager who was born in Korea but has lived in western countries. I felt this was a very positive management change to help bridge communication between western and Korean staff.

My main piece of advice would be to talk to recent teachers to find out how current conditions are on the ground, since as a I said, things can change rapidly. Look for blogs like mine or ask the school for teacher references during your interview – they are happy to provide contacts to current teachers.
