BCM Language Centers – Songpa: Seokchon-dong, Seoul

I worked at Seokchon BCM about ten years ago. In short, it was a good, even a very good place to work.

For more detail, This place was completely above-board, honest and safe to work at. I was given my health insurance card and salary deducted for taxes actually went to the government – this is different from previous places I worked at.

It is a adult hagwon with two middle-school classes a day. Adult classes were split shift – 6:30 AM for a few hours and 6:30 or 7:30 PM for a few hours. There were days when I had more time away from work through the day than through the night – That is, I often finished at 8:30 AM and started at 7:30 PM, having 11hours off during the day, but I finished at 9:30PM and returned the next day for 6:30-only nine hours off.

The students were great – dedicated and motivated adults. I made some close friends in a few classes.

The apartments that came with the job were okay. Second hand furniture but with air conditioning. The apartments were within easy walking distance of work.

There were few days off. Just the public holidays and perhaps a five day weekend in the summer.

The staff made arrangements and adjustments to schedules for teachers who wanted to take classes or the like.

The pay was standard. I don’t think it was special but opportunities came up within the franchise to make extra money- some recording jobs and training of new teachers.

I now teach at a university where the hours are lighter but the students far less interested -really, the students at an adult hagwon – probably any adult hagwon- just about make up for the split shift which can be exhausting if you aren’t careful.
